An Exotic, or exotic short-haired as someone also calls it, is a medium-sized short-haired cat who is known for his gentle nature and kind and calm mind. Some cat organizations believe that the exotic cat is a variety, or variant, of the Persian cat, and thus not a breed in itself. Others, however, believe that the exotic cat is an independent breed, and that is the starting point we will take in the following.
The exotic originates from the Persian cat, and therefore has many similarities with this breed, both when it comes to temperament, mind and appearance. An Exotic is a breed that has been deliberately bred because one wanted to achieve a certain result. Specifically, they wanted to combine the Persian cat's temperament, mind and calm nature with a breed that was significantly less demanding. As you know, a Persian cat has very long hair, and therefore requires a lot of fur care. Something that not everyone is equally fond of. The idea was therefore to combine the Persian cat with a short-haired cat in order to get a breed that required less fur care. It was decided that the British Shorthair was the best bet. It fulfilled the wishes you had in relation to colors etc. and was, as the name also suggests, a short-haired cat breed. The result was a cat that has the mind of the Persian cat and the short hair from the British Shorthair, and has since been a very popular breed worldwide, both as an indoor and outdoor cat. The breed was recognized as an independent breed in 1967, although some still believe that the Exotic is just a variant of the Persian cat. The breed came to Denmark in the mid-1980s and is a fairly widespread breed among Danish families today.
An exotic is very similar to a Persian cat, except that it does not have the Persian cat's long fur, but instead a markedly shorter fur.
The Exotic is a medium-sized cat that weighs between 3.5 kg and 6 kg. It has a big head and a very characteristic and sweet face. The ears are small, while the eyes are large and round. The eyes typically have a color that matches the coat color. The legs are short but powerful. The tail is short and tousled. An Exotic’s coat is short but dense, plush and very soft. It is available in different colors, variants and patterns.
The character traits of the Exotic have been said to be from those of the Persians. An Exotic is therefore a loving, gentle and good-natured breed, which is generally very quiet and calm and gets along well with most people. It is a relatively easy cat to deal with and is therefore well suited as a family cat and as an indoor cat. The Exotic enjoys being pampered and cuddled, but is not for wild play and loud activity. It generally prefers relatively quiet surroundings.
An Exotic cat has a flat but wide skull. This main form can be the cause of health problems, as is also seen in other breeds that have this anatomy. In some cats, it is seen i.a. that the nose is too far inside the head, which can cause breathing problems and cause the cat to constantly have wet eyes. If you are considering acquiring an Exotic, it is therefore recommended that you do not acquire one that has a very extreme head shape. Some Exotic Shorthair have also inherited a gene that causes them to develop cysts in the kidneys, which can lead to impaired kidney function. The problem originates from the Persian cat, and has in some cases unfortunately been passed on to the exotic.
Although the coat does not require as much care as the Persian cat, you should still brush the cat a few times a week or as needed. In addition, the cat should be regularly checked for tartar and have its teeth cleaned at the vet.
