Buy Cymric

A Cymric is a relatively large, muscular and compact tailless cat, which is quite rare in the UK. Some people think that the Cymric is just a long-haired version of the Manx cat, which is why someone also calls the Cymric a long-haired Manx cat.

Origin and history

The Manx cat, from which the Cymric originates, is originally from the Isle of Man, an island in the Irish Sea. Here a mutation occurred among the island's cats, which caused some of the cats to be born without a tail. Exactly when this happened is not known. Due to the size of the island, and therefore limited population of cats, the gene that gave the missing tail was quickly passed on to the island's other cats, thus becoming the dominant gene. Later, in the 1960s, similar kittens with long hair and missing tails appeared in Canada. Here, however, they were bred deliberately, where on the Isle of Man they were instead discarded, for being illegitimate manx cats. It was here, in Canada in the 1960s, that the breed became seriously popular among the general population. However, it would take many years before the Cymric was finally recognized as an official breed. It only happened in the 2000s. Before that, the breed was not recognized as a real breed, but rather as a Manx cat with long hair. The disagreement over the status of the Cymric as a real race, however, continues.

Appearance and characteristics

The Cymric is a medium-sized cat that is muscular, compact and dense with a strong bone structure. The cat is basically tailless, even if someone is born with a tail or with a small "stump". These are often called a "rumpy". There are actually up to four different tail types of cymrics: the completely tailless, those that have a short tail (which consists of one to three vertebrae), those that have a slightly longer tail (about 1/3 of a normal tail length) and finally those who have a actual tail, which is as long as the tail of an ordinary cat. It is impossible to predict what type of tail the kittens from a litter of cymrics will get.

A Cymric has a round head with round eyes, which are typically either copper-colored, green, hazel or yellow. The ears sit at a relatively large distance from each other. The coat is long, dense and thick and has an undercoat and can be in a number of different colors, e.g. silver, brown, white, blue, black and red. It can also have different patterns, ranging from completely monochromatic to bicolor, tricolor, etc. The cat weighs 3 to 5 kg, and the males are typically slightly larger than the females.

Temperament and personality

A Cymric is a calm, balanced and social cat. It loves people and forges strong bonds with its owners. It also gets along well with other pets, such as dogs and cats as well as children.

With its good-natured and calm mind, the cat therefore works well as a family cat. However, the Cymric cat is not happy to be alone for long periods, which is why it is not a cat you should get if you are very out of the house where the cat will be alone. This can lead to dissatisfaction.

Health and disease

Unfortunately, the gene that gives the Cymric cat (and the Manx cat) their unusual tails can also be fatal. This is because kittens that inherit two copies of the tailless gene die before birth. These kittens make up approx. 25% of a litter, which is why the Cymric's litter is often not very large.

Some kittens are also born with holes in the vertebrae, fused vertebrae or intestinal and bladder problems. Some of these conditions appear already at birth, while others only become visible within the first six months of the cat's lifetime. Therefore, Cymric cats are typically only sold from the breeder when they are older than 6 months.

Care

Since the cat has a thick and long coat, it should be brushed daily. During periods when the cat sheds a lot, it may be necessary to brush it several times a day.
