A Cornish Rex is a breed of domesticated cats. It is a relatively small cat that is very lively and active. The breed is very humane, and is thus a cat that requires a lot of attention from its owner. A Cornish Rex is also characterized by the fact that it has no "real" hair, but only an undercoat.
The Cornish Rex is a relatively small cat with a slender but muscular body and long legs. It has small paws, a long tail and a wedge-shaped head. The eyes are almond-shaped and typically have the same color as the coat. The ears are large and located high on the head. The cat's fur is quite special as it only has an undercoat. It therefore has a very short coat. However, the coat is silky soft and fine. It is available in many different variations and colors. A Cornish Rex is also an agile, streamlined and athletic cat. It is therefore a very active breed. It is lively and has a high level of activity.
Although many people think so, a Cornish Rex is not an allergy-friendly cat breed. You should therefore not acquire this type of cat if you suffer from cat allergies. Another misconception is that the cat sheds less because it has such short hair. However, this is also not correct. The breed sheds exactly as much as any other cat. Although the breed's hair is very short, it still needs to be replaced to the same extent as other cats, and therefore the breed sheds as much as other cat breeds.
As I said, a Cornish Rex is a very lively and active cat, but it is also a cat that is very contact-seeking, social and attention-seeking. It loves to interact with its owner. If you buy a Cornish Rex, you must therefore be aware that the cat requires quality time on a daily basis. You must also be prepared for the fact that it is a very active breed that loves to unfold, jump and play. It is therefore a breed that requires time to be set aside for play and socializing on a daily basis.
The breed Cornish Rex actually originated by an "error", as it is a result of a genetic mutation. The breed thus originated on a farm in Cornwall, England in the 1950s, where the family cat gave birth to kittens. However, one of the kittens looked markedly different than all the others. It was cream-colored and had an unusually fine and curly coat. It was later to prove to be the first Cornish Rex. The couple from Cornwall fell in love with the little cream-colored kitten, and thus launched a breeding program with the aim of creating a new breed. The breed was later, in 1957, imported further from England to the United States, where it experienced a tremendous popularity. In 1967, it was recognized as an official breed.
Most Cornish Rex suffer from hair loss, ie. that the cat with age may end up being either completely or partially bald. This gives the cat some health challenges, such as yeast infection, which you as the owner must be aware of. The short coat of the breed, or in some cases baldness, also increases the cat's risk of getting sunburned. You should therefore not leave your Cornish Rex out in the sun for too long. Life expectancy is 9 to 13 years.
A Cornish Rex requires only minimal fur care. In fact, in some cases it may be best not to brush it, as its small short and fine hair can be damaged by it. However, the breed still requires, like all other cat breeds, that the ears be kept clean and that the nails cut. Finally, the paws should be cleaned regularly to remove accumulation of body oils.
