Buy Colourpoint

A Colourpoint is a cat breed that originated by crossing a Persian cat with a Siamese. In some organizations, such as the World Cat Federation, however, Colorpoint is the name of a breed classification that includes what other organizations consider to be two breeds, namely the Himalayan cat and the Javanese cat. However, we will focus on the Colourpoint as one independent race in the following.

Appearance and characteristics

First and foremost, a Colourpoint is characterized by its long, thick and silky fur, which is typically light with contrasting markings on, for example, the face, paws, ears or neck. The cat also has a very full collar over the shoulders, which continues down between the front legs. It has small round ears, which sit relatively low on the head. A Colourpoint also has some very characteristic eyes, which are large and round, and have a very clear blue color.

Temperament and personality

A Colourpoint is a very calm and gentle cat. It is not a cat with a high level of activity that roams around all day. On the contrary.

However, you should not be fooled by its beautiful appearance, and think that the cat is just for decoration; the Colourpoint may well be a bit temperamental and demanding if it does not get its way. On the other hand, the Colourpoint is a cat that attaches and binds itself very much to its owner, which it always stays close to. A Colourpoint is clearly best suited as an indoor cat, as it is very dependent on its owner. It can also work well as a family cat.

Origin and history

As mentioned earlier, a Colourpoint is a mix of a Siamese and a Persian cat. There had long been a desire to pair precisely these two breeds. After several failed attempts, first in 1924 in Sweden, and later in the United States, it finally succeeded, and the first Colourpoints could see the light of day immediately after World War II. However, the breed was only recognized as an official breed in 1955, when a proper and solid rootstock had only been created. A cat with the personality and intelligence of the Siamese and the gentle and calm mind of the Persian cat had been created. The perfect combination for many cat owners. We first saw the Colourpoint in Denmark in the mid-1960s. The breed then experienced a strong popularity up through the 70s.

Health and disease

There are a number of different health risks that come with a Colourpoint that you as an owner must be very aware of. Since the Persian cat has a large share in the breed, it has unfortunately got some of the problems it has.

These being i.a. polycystic kidney disease, which is an inherited kidney disease in which the cat develops cysts in the kidneys that lead to enlarged kidneys and chronic kidney disease. Fortunately, however, it is possible to detect this genetic defect in a genetic test. In addition, there are a number of examples of cats where the shape of the head causes problems with narrowing of the nose and where the tear ducts do not work properly. It is therefore important, if you are considering buying a Colourpoint, that you select a kitten that does not have an overly extreme head shape, as this can give rise to problems.

Care

Like so many other long-haired cats, the Colourpoint requires a lot of fur care. It must be brushed daily to keep the coat healthy and well. Therefore, if you fall in love with a Colourpoint, you must be prepared for the fact that it is a breed where time must be set aside to care for the cat on a daily basis. At least 20 minutes of daily brushing and one day a week where it gets the "big turn" is recommended. Some Colourpoint cats also need to have their face dried daily. Finally, it is also recommended that you give the cat a bath at regular intervals to reduce the amount of oil on the cat's fur and skin.
