A Chartreux is a rare breed of cat that comes from France. It is a large and muscular cat, with relatively short legs. The cat is particularly known for its very fast reflexes and its blue or silver-gray short water-repellent fur. They are also very well known for their "smile", which is due to the fact that their pointed nose, in combination with the main structure, makes it often look like they are smiling.
A Chartreux is a very old cat breed that comes from France. However, it is believed to have originally been imported from the Middle East. It is first mentioned as early as 1558 in a poem by the French poet Joachim du Bellay. The cat was later bred by French monks outside Paris, where it was used as a work cat for i.a. to hunt pests. It is named after a French monastery, Grande Chartreux. In 1920, the breeding program for the Chartreux was seriously started. It resulted in a healthy and strong cat with an athletic body, a short-haired blue coat and an adorable face.
The cat was subsequently imported to the UK and subsequently to the rest of Europe. In connection with World War II, however, the breed was almost exterminated. Luckily, some committed breeders managed to save the breed, but it is still a rare breed, which is not very widespread in Denmark.
The Chartreux is known for its dense, soft and plush fur. It has large round and very expressive eyes, which are typically yellow or copper colored. It is a small to medium-sized cat with muscular shoulders, a short but strong neck, strong jaws, a well-developed snout and a relatively strong bone structure. The legs are short in relation to the body, but strong. The males are slightly larger than the females. Chartreux's athletic physique is due to the fact that it was originally used as a work cat for hunting pests and other rodents.
The coat is blue, thick and dense and becomes significantly longer and even thicker in winter. The coat also has a rather rough structure, which aims to protect the cat from external factors.
A Chartreux is a friendly, balanced and calm cat that gets along well with other cats, and dogs for that matter, as well as children. Therefore, the breed is well suited as a family cat.
It is a cat that is not very demanding of attention, but, nevertheless, likes to be near its owners. However, it likes to keep a little distance, and can be a very discreet cat. This is probably due to its origin as a hunting cat, where it was supposed to sneak into the prey and be discreet and quiet. A Chartreux, however, is a loyal friend and companion that is gentle of temperament and gets along well with most people. It is confident, calm and thrives really well as an indoor cat. The Chartreux is also a playful breed, and likes to play with its owner. However, it can also easily play with itself, if it has some toys. It is particularly fond of hunting games because of its background as a hunting cat.
It is important to make sure that the cat is active, to keep it in good shape and to ensure that it gets enough exercise.
The breed is described as one of the healthiest cat breeds. If you look after and care for your Chartreux, you can expect a healthy and fit cat for many years.
However, isolated and rare cases of knee problems, kidney disease and urinary tract stones have been reported. However, these are extremely rare cases, but still something you as an owner should be aware of. The cat's life expectancy is 8 to 13 years.
A Chartreux is generally easy to care for. A weekly brushing is usually enough. In addition, teeth and gums should be checked to ensure that no gingivitis or mouth infection occurs.
