British Shorthair

British Shorthair, also known as "The British", is a cat breed, which due to its large and soft appearance, is also called the "teddy cat". British Shorthair is an old cat breed that has been bred for over 100 years. It has previously been known by the names British Blue and Chartreux. British Shorthair is England's national cat

Appearance and characteristics

As mentioned, British Shorthair is known for its very "teddy bear" appearance. It is a medium-sized cat that appears round, full-bodied, muscular and well-padded. It has short but solid legs as well as large and round eyes, which are typically copper colored. The head is large and round with thick cheeks, a strong jaw and a well-developed snout. The coat, hence the name, is short but thick and has a rough structure. In winter, the coat becomes significantly longer and even thicker. The color of the coat is approved in a number of different variants, and can therefore be black, blue, chocolate, purple, red or cream. In addition, it can be both with and without a pattern.

Males are generally larger than females and can weigh up to 10 kg, with females typically weighing only a maximum of 6 kg.

Temperament and personality

The British Shorthair is not a temperamental cat. It is, on the other hand, very affectionate, tolerant and loving. It is therefore well suited for families with children and as a family cat. As a breed, the British Shorthair is generally a calm and balanced cat, which is not very demanding. It is also good for being alone at home, unlike many other cat breeds. It is thus neither destructive nor hyperactive. However, this does not mean that you have to get a British Shorthair if you are out of the house a lot. Although British Shorthair loves to play, it is not a cat that requires much attention. It is fine in its own company and can easily entertain itself if required.

British Shorthair is also an intelligent cat that can be trained and learn various tricks and commands. The breed is i.a. often seen used in television commercials and movies. All in all, the British Shorthair is a very easy and docile cat that can adapt to most environments. It thus fits nicely into an apartment and as an indoor cat.

Origin and history

As the name also strongly suggests, British Shorthair belongs in the UK. However, the breed is originally thought to have originated in the Roman Empire, where it was kept as a pet and used for hunting pests. It was the Romans who imported the cat to Europe and to the British Isles. In 1871, the breed was first shown at an exhibition and one of the most bred cat breeds in Europe is today.

Health and disease

In general, the British Shorthair is a healthy breed. However, there are two possible health problems in particular that you as an owner should be aware of. The first is a thickened heart and the second is hip problems. The former is a condition that is primarily seen in males. Therefore, as a potential buyer of a British Shorthair, one should make sure that the cat is examined for this heart disease. The hip problems are due to the fact that, for some cats, the hip socket and the femur do not fit together, which can result in osteoarthritis and other hip-related problems. It is unknown exactly how widespread it is among the breed, but it is something you as an owner should be aware of. In addition, there is of course the general care which i.a. involves good dental care to prevent oral infections. In addition, the ears should be regularly cleaned of dirt and grime, just as the eyes should be kept clean. It may also be necessary to trim the cat's nails.

Care

British Shorthair is not a breed that requires much care. You only need to brush the cat during the shedding season, which is in the spring and autumn. This is to prevent hairballs from forming.
