Birma is a cat breed, also known as the Tibetan Temple Cat. There is no complete agreement on where the cat comes from, but it is believed to come from the East, where it was considered a sacred animal, like the Siamese. The cat is very characteristic and eye-catching due to its very special and unique markings. The body color is light / milky white with a golden tinge, while the tail, legs, ears and face are mask-colored, i.e. has a different color than the body color.
The breed first appeared in Europe around 1920. There are many stories and legends about how it came to be here, but the most recognized story is that a couple of Birmas came to France from the Lao-Tsun Temple in Burma in Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, one of the cats, the male, died, but the other, which was a female, survived and was also pregnant. According to history, this litter formed the basis of the breed as we know it today. As I said, there is disagreement about whether the story is true or not. Some also believe that the breed originated instead by crossing a Siamese with a Persian cat. The first Birma to come to Denmark came from Sweden, Holland and England in 1968.
The Birma has a very distinctive and exotic appearance. It has a medium length coat, which is white, while it is dark at the "ends", i.e. in the snout, legs, neck and ears. Such a combination is called a mask. The head is powerful with full cheeks and small blue eyes, which are oval in shape. It has short but solid legs. The tail is thin at the root and full and plush at the tip. The ears are small and placed at a good distance from each other. The cat has a long body and can grow quite large and weigh up to 5 kg. However, it seems larger, due to its large, beautiful fur. The coat is soft and silky and is easy to care for, as it does not tend to filter.
The Birma is a very social cat that loves to be with humans and also gets along well with other animals. However, the breed tends to be primarily associated with one particular person.
It is a reliable, gentle and friendly cat that is easy to deal with. It is therefore well suited as a family cat for e.g. the family with children. It is also a breed that likes to play. However, it is not demanding, and can easily play itself, as long as it has some toys. Due to the social nature of the cat, it is not a breed that lends itself to being very alone. If the cat is left alone for many hours every day, it will become unhappy. Therefore, if you have long working hours, or something else that makes the cat very lonely, you can advantageously get a playmate for it. The breed has an easy time forming friendships with other animals, dogs and cats.
The Birma is generally a strong cat that is healthy and well. No hereditary diseases or defects have been registered to be aware of. A healthy and nutritious diet is the best way to keep your cat healthy and well. Therefore, always make sure to buy high quality food with a high content of meat and animal protein. The average life expectancy of a Birma is 12 to 16 years.
Since Birma does not have a particularly strong undercoat, the coat does not tend to filter. However, it still needs to be brushed, but typically no more than a few times a week.
