American Curl

An American Curl is a relatively new cat breed, which is largely characterized by its very unusual ears. The ears of an American Curl curl back from the face and towards the middle of the cat's back head. It gives the cat a very special and distinctive expression that has made it popular all over the world.

Origin

The American Curl has a very special origin, which is connected to a story that took place in California in the USA in 1981. Here the two Americans, Grace and Joe Ruga, found two stray cats with some very special curly ears in their garden. One cat, which they chose to call Shulamith, they kept, while the other cat disappeared again. Shulamith later ended up giving birth to kittens that all had the same special curly ears as their mother. Later, Grace and Joe chose to show the special cats at a cat show in Palm Springs, and shortly thereafter, the breed's popularity exploded. Soon everyone wanted the cats with the curly ears. In 1985, the cat was recognized as the official breed by the majority of the major international cat organizations, and thus The American Curl emerged.

Appearance

As mentioned, the American Curl is a medium-sized cat that is characterized by its curly ears. However, be aware that the ears typically only begin to curl when the cat is approx. 4 weeks old. Furthermore, not all the kittens in a litter necessarily get the curly ears.

In addition to the curly ears, the American Curl has a wedge-shaped head with a straight nose and large almond-shaped eyes. The tail is wide at the beginning and narrow at the end. The breed is available in both long-haired and short-haired versions and all colors and patterns are allowed.

Temperament and personality

The American Curl is an intelligent cat breed that is calm and friendly with a well balanced mind. They are playful and basically like humans and other animals. American Curls are also very social cats, which fit well into the family with children or the family with other pets. It is important that the cat is allowed to socialize with other animals or humans, and that you as the owner give it attention on a daily basis. Due to its social nature, the cat is not suited to being alone at home for long periods of time. This can cause the cat to become unhappy. The American Curl is not the most active cat breed. But it is curious and would like to be part of your daily chores and activities.

It is recommended that the cat be kept as an indoor cat or in an enclosed cat yard.

Care

The American Curl is generally not a cat breed that requires a lot of care. However, the cat is available in both a short-haired and long-haired version, where especially the latter requires a little extra fur care. If you have a short-haired American Curl, you can basically expect to have to care for the coat once a week, while the long-haired version requires fur care a couple of times a week to keep the coat healthy and beautiful. Like so many other cat breeds, the American Curl is just as susceptible to ear and tooth problems. You should therefore regularly inspect the cat's ears and clean them of any dirt, just as regular dental hygiene should be done. It can be either in the form of toothbrushing a few times a week or by tooth cleaning at the vet.

Health

The breed's curly ears are due to a genetic mutation, which has later been deliberately bred, and is thus not an expression of a health problem. The American Curl is overall a very healthy breed. This is partly due to the fact that the breed is not as "pure" as other cat breeds. On the contrary, the breed is known for its strong resistance to, for example, colds and infectious diseases. If the cat is vaccinated according to the regulations, you can expect a healthy and fit cat for the rest of its life. The average life expectancy of an American Curl is 13-15 years.
