An American Bobtail is an unusual and rare cat breed that was bred in the late 1960s. It is characterized by its very short, almost "blunt" tail, which is only approx. a third of what it is in other cat breeds.
In addition to the characteristic short tail, the American Bobtail is a cat that in many ways has a very "wild" expression. This is something that many breeders have deliberately tried to breed.
In addition, the American Bobtail can be described as being a very robust and close-built cat. It has a medium-wide body and broad hips as well as a broad, wedge-shaped head with a broad nose and a prominent forehead and pronounced cheekbones. It has large, strong and round paws. The eyes are medium-sized and almond-shaped and the eye color typically varies with the coat color. The females are generally slightly smaller than the males, which can weigh up to 7.5 kg. An ordinary cat typically weighs only approx. 3-5 kg.
The breed is available as both long-haired and short-haired, and can have any color.
The American Bobtail is a relatively new cat breed, and it remains uncertain exactly how it originated. It is believed to have first appeared in Arizona in the USA in the 1960s, when an American couple, named John and Brenda Sanders, happened to find a kitten sitting next to the road. They took it home and later decided to mate it with their other cat. All the kittens from the litter were born with the characteristic short tail, and thus came to form the basis of the new breed.
The American Bobtail was recognized as an official cat breed in 1989 - but only in the United States.
The American Bobtail is a playful, loving and social cat. It has a moderate level of activity, where it both likes to play and be active with its family, but also enjoys lying down and relaxing on the sofa at the same time. With its social nature and contact-seeking behavior, the American Bobtail fits perfectly with the family with children, or the family who already has another pet. The breed is very sociable and gets along well with both humans and animals.
The American Bobtail is also a very intelligent cat that loves to play and demonstrate its innate hunting instincts to its owner. The breed is also known to be very teachable, and can i.a. learn to retrieve and obey specific commands. Some owners have even reported that their American Bobtail has learned to walk on a leash.
In terms of sounds, it is not a cat that says very much.
The American Bobtail has a low to moderate need for fur care. It is recommended, as with all other cat breeds, to keep an eye on the cat's teeth and gums on an ongoing basis. Brush the cat's teeth weekly and give it a dental cleaning at the vet if needed. Also, be sure to keep your ears clean of dirt and grime and trim your nails as needed.
Finally, always make sure to give the cat the correct food.
The cat's characteristic short tail is the result of a genetic mutation that affects the tail development. It is a harmless condition.
The American Bobtail is a breed that is primarily prevalent in the United States. There are not many breeders of this breed in the UK or even Europe. If you find one, you must therefore pay attention to inbreeding. Inbreeding can cause congenital diseases and health problems. If, on the other hand, you find a pure breeding line, the American Bobtail is a very healthy cat breed, which is not known to have any significant hereditary diseases.
However, examples of diabetes have been seen, but this is typically only something that happens if the cat has been malnourished, for example by having primarily been fed carbohydrate food.
