An Abyssinian is a medium-sized cat breed, which is characterized by its relatively long legs as well as firm and muscular body. The face is typically marked and powerful with almond-shaped and very lively eyes. The ears are large, forward-facing and located far apart compared to other cat breeds. The Abyssinian is FIFe approved in a variety of colors.
The Abyssinian is one of the world's oldest cat breeds. Its exact origin is unknown and has been studied for many years. However, it is believed to be from the area around Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia. This is partly due to the many similarities the cat has with the depictions of cats that the Egyptians made over 4,000 years ago.
However, it was in the 1860s that the breed was seriously bred in the UK when it was brought to the country from Abyssinia (ancient Ethiopia) as souvenirs of soldiers from the colonization. Soon after, the breed became incredibly popular in the rest of Europe, and later the breed also came to the United States and Canada. In Denmark, however, it was first in the 1960s that the Danes started to see regular breeding of the Abyssinian.
The Abyssinian is a relatively easy cat to keep. It does not require much brushing or fur care. 1-2 times a week is typically enough.
On the other hand, the Abyssinian has a number of known health problems that you as a future owner should be aware of. However, this is a general trend when it comes to very purebred animal breeds. The known health problems include mouth infections, tartar, gingivitis and in some cases periodontitis.
The Abyssinian health challenge is generally concentrated around the mouth. Therefore, it is important to regularly check and care for the cat's teeth and gums. Regular dental cleaning at the vet is also recommended. If preventive measures are taken to prevent these conditions, the Abyssinian is generally a healthy cat.
Hereditary defects are rare but can occur. It can i.a. revolve around impaired renal function at an early age. It is a rare condition, but as an owner you should be aware if your Abyssinians show signs of kidney problems. We recommend that you always examine the breeding line for the cat you are considering buying in order to ensure that there are no hereditary diseases in it.
An Abyssinian is not a fancy cat that sits still and looks cute and adorable. It is, on the other hand, a very active and lively cat breed. It is creative, playful and loves to follow its owner around the home. Whatever you do, you can count on your Abyssinians being close by.
Someone might even go so far as to call the Abyssinian an attention-seeking cat. This is due to the social and extroverted behavior that is otherwise rare in cats. One might say that the Abyssinian is a feline version of a labrador; always happy and loving.
The Abyssinian is also fond of guests, and loves both other people and animals. Finally, the Abyssinian is a cat that requires a lot of space with good opportunities for diversion and movement. This is due to the cat's high activity level and lively nature.
Basically, the Abyssinian is an indoor cat, and is not suitable for being outdoors. This is due to the curious and lively nature of the breed, which increases the risk that they will be run down or otherwise injured if they are allowed to go outside unattended.
Due to the Abyssinian's great need for socialization and company, it is not a cat breed that you should choose if you are very much out of the home, and the cat should therefore be alone at home. An Abyssinian will not thrive under such conditions. In return, you get a cat that, if you spend your time with it, will be your best friend for the rest of your life and follow you through thick and thin!
